The Silent Killer - Be Aware
The main challenge with ovarian cancer is early diagnosis. The ovaries are buried deep within the abdomen, and symptoms of the disease are vague and unspecific. So by the time the cancer is diagnosed it is very often too late.
Unlike breast and cervical cancer there is no way of screening women to catch it before its spreads. This is why, as part of its work, The Eve Appeal is supporting the world’s largest ovarian cancer screening trial, involving 200,000 women right across the UK. If the trial proves that a simple predictive test works, ovarian cancer screening will save thousands of lives every year.
Until then, although some evidence is starting to emerge, we need to be sure that the symptoms associated with ovarian cancer can help save women’s lives. The Eve Appeal is also supporting ongoing research into this.
We advise that all women should follow a three point health code throughout their life:
-
Be aware of any changes in your body
-
talk to their GP if you have concerns
-
keep going back if the problem persists
Although The Eve Appeal does raise awareness of ovarian cancer, and helps to provide a voice for people affected by the disease, we don’t provide information or support services. If you have any concerns about ovarian cancer please visit ovacome.org.uk or ring 020 7380 9589. |
"Screening just wasn't on offer"
"When I finally received the all clear for breast cancer, I was told the next day that I had developed ovarian cancer. The two are often connected, particularly when there is a genetic link. As my sister had died from ovarian cancer I strongly believe that I should have been screened for it. But screening just wasn’t on offer."
